Piano tuning is using a tool called a “tuning hammer” to increase or decrease the tension of each of the roughly 240 strings in a piano conducting them into a harmonious relationship with every other string.

When It Sounds Bad
For very good sound quality and tuning stability, tune your piano twice per year, summer and winter, when moisture and temperature extremes peak. Remember that a neglected piano cannot be made to sound its best. Often such a piano will need a “pitch raise” and then a fine tuning.
What is a Pitch Raise?
A “pitch raise” is essentially a quick “in the ballpark” tuning to get a badly out of tune piano back to near the correct pitch. Usually this is done when a piano has not been tuned for some years or has been subjected to temperature and moisture extremes or been in storage or been moved. After the pitch raise a fine tuning can be done.
